BARI DREIBAND-BURMAN
Bari
brings to the Burman Studios' make up effects a unique background
in fine art.
As a fine arts illustrator, Bari attended six of the nation's
best schools before ending up at the California Institute of Arts,
where she received her masters. After eight years of gallery exhibitions
that toured the country, she worked as a medical illustrater at
UCLA. Then, in 1977, she took a job at the Universal Studios make
up department, where she quickly became known for her fine-art
styled work, including tattoos, body paintings, exotic designs,
etc.
Her background and reputation led her to meet her future husband
Tom Burman. In 1981, she was hired by him to design the transformation
of Nastassia Kinski in Cat People; ever since then, she
and Tom have worked together to create some of cinema's most memorable
moments.
TOM BURMAN
Tom
Burman is universally acknowledged as one of the most experienced
and finest make up effects artists in the world.
His career began in 1966, apprenticing at 20th Century-Fox . A
short time later, Tom joined John Chambers in assisting him in
the creation of the make ups that would change the way the audiances,
writers and producers looked at the art of make up. The film?
Planet of the Apes.
After leaving Fox, Tom started the very first make up studio,
and he was responsible for creating the term "Special Make Up
Effects". Through the years his studio has been credited with
many firsts, including cable operated, pneumatic and remote controlled
animatronics. He was the first to do full body applications in
foam latex as well as gelatin, and he also pioneered the use of
radio controlled multiple bullet hits.
Tom made the move to directing with his surreal comedy, Meet
The Hollowheads, for which he co-wrote the screenplay. The
film starred John Glover, the late Anne Ramsey, and, in her film
debut, Juliette Lewis. Meet the Hollowheads won the Grand
Prix award in the London Shock Around the Clock film festival
and also received recognition in several other festivals around
the world.
Whether directing, writing or creating make up effects, Tom and
his partner Bari are constantly looking for exciting new directions,
and they believe nothing is impossible at The Burman Studio.
